What is the difference between Web, online, blended and hybrid courses?
Web Courses are taught completely online. Web courses are offered through both the resident instruction and the World Campus delivery systems. Web courses do not meet in traditional classrooms, with the possible exception of scheduled examinations. A Web course may be offered by both resident instruction and the World Campus with identical course content. However, a student enrolled in a resident-instruction Web course may be expected to be on campus for a classroom experience (e.g., to take an exam) while a student enrolled in a World Campus course will not be required to be on campus for any part of the course.
Blended learning refers to taking some courses online and some in the classroom to complete your program.
Hybrid courses replace a portion of the classroom meetings with online assignments, group work and chats through Penn State’s course management system, ANGEL.
Students thinking about Web course work can check their readiness by using a self-assessment and should read Considerations When Planning a Schedule to consider the most desirable learning environment.
In 1998 The Pennsylvania State University launched its twenty-fifth campus, Penn State World Campus, delivering more than fifty distance education programs to learners around the world.
The World Campus provides adult learners worldwide with some of Penn State’s most highly regarded graduate and undergraduate degree and certificate programs, and continuing professional education programs; these programs are available anytime, anywhere. Whether you want to complete your degree, make yourself more professionally marketable, or sharpen a few skills, the World Campus can help you get where you want to go.
Since the World Campus launched its pilot programs in 1998, it has grown to include exceptional adult learners from all fifty states, from more than forty countries, and from all seven continents. These students are all part of our global learning community, interacting with faculty and exchanging ideas and expertise with one another, as they strive to meet their personal educational and career goals.
